Personal Social & Emotional Development

Successful personal social and emotional development is crucial for very young children.   This area of learning is most important and it gives them the best opportunity for success throughout their time in school and beyond.

What does it mean?

Becoming independent and self-confident.

Learning to express their needs and feelings in appropriate ways.

Learning to co-operate with others and understand the needs and feelings of others.

What does it mean?

Making positive relationships with others

Developing a positive attitude towards learning new things.

Taking an interest in things.

Learning to tell the difference between right and wrong.

What does it mean?

Becoming aware of their own needs.

Being able to understand and talk about their own feelings.

Developing a positive attitude and a sense of well being.

Learning to respect living things and other cultures.

How do we achieve this in the nursery?

Here are just some of the ways

Each child is settled individually by a member of staff to ensure they feel happy, safe and secure.

The staff encourage children to take turns, share resources and negotiate with each other during play.

Staff help children to develop their self-help skills, eg putting on their own coat and pouring their own drink at snack time

Some More Ways

The staff encourage the children to be independent in their choice of resources.

Staff ensure that the whole curriculum is enriched with aspects from many different cultures.  These include, dress, music, food and books.  The nursery also celebrates festivals from various faiths, including Christmas and the Chinese New Year.

Staff seek opportunities to praise children's positive behaviour and achievements.
