Registration, Admission and Induction

ADMISSIONS POLICY

Wallace Road Nursery School uses the county guidelines where appropriate for admission of pupils.

REGISTRATION

  1. A waiting list is kept by the Head Teacher and any parent may register a child's name.
  2. Names can be registered from birth.
  3. Registration forms are dated as they are submitted and a receipt issued to parents.
  4. Notes on the registration of places are issued with each application form.
  5. Wallace Road has no catchment area. Place are allocated in order of application except in the case of a specific priority admission.
  6. Parents may state a preference for the morning or afternoon session. When all parental preferences cannot be met consultation with parents about alternatives will be discussed.
  7. Parents that request to discuss nursery routine and view the nursery before completing the registration form are welcomed at a mutually convenient time.

ADMISSIONS

  1. Children are normally admitted in the September after their third birthday and stay in the nursery for one academic year. All places are either five morning sessions or five afternoon sessions. Children may be admitted during the term after their third birthday if spaces are available.
  2. In some cases it may be appropriate for a child to remain in the nursery for a further period. Such cases are discussed and agreed between the parents, head of primary school and Area Education Officer.
  3. Health Visitors, doctors and social workers may request that a child has a priority place. A priority form can be obtained and marked 'Confidential'. These children would normally be admitted ahead of others on the waiting list. Priority places can be given for a variety of special needs but the maximum number of priority places should not exceed twenty percent.

INDUCTION

  1. Parents are informed of the place available during May/June before the September intake. Others places are offered as they become available.
  2. A time is arranged for parent and child to visit the nursery to familiarise the family with staff and routine.
  3. An appointment is arranged for the member of staff who will be responsible for settling the child to visit the family at home. We consider this to be very important when the child is in familiar surroundings and queries and anxieties can be discussed in privacy.
  4. Children are admitted at the beginning of each term and depending on how the child is the carer is requested to stay with the child for some or all the first session. Staff then use their discretion when requesting that carers leave for short periods of time gradually building up to the child staying for the whole session on his/her own.
  5. Each child is and if necessary an individual programme for settling will be discussed.

TRANSFER FROM ONE NURSERY TO ANOTHER

If a child has been receiving nursery education and changes address, sympathetic consideration will be given when a vacancy occurs.

PROLONGED ABSENCE

Places are expected to be utilised fully and if a child is absent the school should be notified. In cases of frequent absence the Head Teacher will contact the family. If the place cannot be utilised fully it may be re-allocated to a child on the waiting list.
