Special Educational Needs |
The staff and Governors at Wallace Road Nursery School will ensure that all children have access to a full and varied curriculum. Kim Baxter is responsible for overseeing the provision of education for all children. Pupils with Special Educational Needs are encouraged and supported to participate in all activities offered by the nursery; some of those activities may be tailored to meet their specific needs |
When a child's development, behaviour or well-being is causing concern, the child's key worker will talk to parents and discuss the concern. We hope that if you as parents have any worries about your child's language, cognitive development or social and independence skills you will share them with us. We can usually help and support you, or give you names of people and organisations that can. |
All children have times in their early years at school when they find some activities, tasks or routines difficult. These are short lived and the nursery staff are extremely experienced at supporting children through these times. These may include things like a pet dying, family break-up, any unexpected situation. |
After support from you and the nursery if we or you still have concerns, you will be asked to meet with the Head Teacher to discuss a more structured approach of support. This will probably involve your child having some individual learning targets, eg linking two words together or naming six colours etc. This is called an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P). These are renewed termly with parents and other professionals that are involved, e.g. a Speech Therapist. We record progress and choose new targets. |
All the children in nursery work in large and small groups or one-to-one with an adult. Children who have an I.E.P have regular small group and one-to-one opportunities with adults. The nursery also employs extra adults called Learning Support Assistants who deliver the I.E.P's. |
The nursery follows the Northampton guidelines regarding children with Special Educational Needs and the 'Code of Practice' (Department for Education and Skills). These are available in school. You can also read our own 'Special Educational Needs Policy'. |
